Intro to Newspaper Design

1. Colorado Daily, its my favorite newspaper front because the articles on it seem interesting and amusing.

4. "Drunken Pantless man quite the joyride" Im interested in it because i find this headline rather amusing and it makes me want to read the actual article.

5. 3 stories are on the front page.

6. The placement of the headline, and the main photo is usually larger than the rest.

News Paper Parts/Design


  • Two sizes of newspaper
    • 1. Broad sheet- very tall and folds over, twice as tall. folds in middle
    • 2. Tabloid- like a magazine
  • Typically newspapers have 4 articles
  • Parts of Newspaper
    • photos
    • headlines- complete sentences
    • sub-headlines
    • story
    • date
    • title
    • teasers- something that makes you want to read the newspaper
    • place
    • jump- information to find rest of article
    • Lines- help to distinguish where one article ends and another begins
    • Flag- name of newspaper
    • Folio- reference information
    • attention grabbers
    • captions
    • byline- name and title of writer
    • stop-tells you the story is over, when it ends
    • kickers- tags that tell you what article is about
    • info graphic- graphic form to show information

Conflict: people fighting
Prominence: important or famous people
Human Interest: drama

Photoshop Notes


  • SAVE AS: Rename your image. Make sure the image is saved as a .jpg at the highest(maximum) image quality
  • SAVE: you do no have to rename the image at this point. Save often and regularly.
  • NESTLE: Tools are stacked on each other- to access those tools you have to left click and hold.
  • Shortcuts: Use command keys!! 
Command + = zoom in

Command - = zoom out
command o = open
command c = copy
command v = paste
command z = undo
command, option, z = step backward
command s = save
command p = print
command l = levels
  • To turn an image go to >Image>Image Rotation
CW= clockwise
CCW= counterclockwise
  • Adjusting Levels. >Imagine>adjustments>levels

  • To make an image black and white. Use grayscale >Image > Mode > Grayscale
